dia de los muertos is right around the corner. i don’t know if i’ll be erecting another big altar this year, though. i may just do a small table-top or shelf-sized altar. something small, but meaningful to me.
to get my season started, i pulled out the stuffed skull forms i made but didn’t decorate last year. i covered one with gesso and drew some guidelines on it for painting.
i picked out a small selection of colors from my acrylics collection and painted until i felt like i was done.

i’m really happy with the results! last year’s skulls were sewing/gluing/embroidering/beading projects, so painting was a whole new experience. and a FUN one, at that. next up, i’ll be painting the rest of last year’s skulls, and hopefully making up some more blanks.
i’ve brushed matte medium on each of these. i’m planning to do some more painting this weekend.
AND i’m planning on (finally) posting the pattern for making these skulls. uhhh, once i actually get around to scanning the darn thing. i’d like to post a tutorial, but we’ll see how that goes. not sure how good my photos will be, since i’ll be sewing small curvy pieces of fabric. hmmmm…

I absolutely love the skulls you make – they’re beautiful!
thanks so much for offering to post the pattern, I would love that.
