this is officially my last “every day in may” post. i came pretty close to blogging every day this month, so i’m happy. plus i did a lot of crafting, so score two for team life with monkey!
today’s post concerns fabric flowers. i made my first batch of them just about 20 years ago, when i became deeply interested in millinery. i found the directions in the trimmings section of one of the few millinery how-to books i was able to find back then. they’re quick and easy and versatile. the only limits are the fabrics and notions i have in my stash at any given time. here are a few i made and sewed to a velvet hat (also made by me) in the early 90s:
millinery velvet, taffeta, vintage buttons… simple design, kind of classy, kind of funky.
yesterday i pulled this piece of vintage kimono fabric out of my stash:
and turned part of it into this:
with beads and felt and a pinback, i have a new accessory for my red corduroy coat.
oddly enough, this is the first time i’ve made one of these flowers with leaves attached to it.
i think i like it.

one of the collaged birthday cards has made it to its final destination, so here goes:

i was BUSY yesterday.
knitted a few roses.
decided to do something with my old “where’s waldo” t-shirt.
and i got an idea and shot a crappy photo of my right hand.
and i used that crappy photo as a guide to draw my hand onto the non-sticky side of the backing paper from that printable fabric i used to make wallets last weekend.
i think i should’ve ironed the painted part of the shirt before i pulled it over the dressform. but hey, no biggie. it was a fun experiment!
i also worked on a collage, which i may or may not finish tonight. gotta love those long holiday weekends.

i think i’m done embroidering the denim skirt… for now, anyway.
dunno what i’ll do with the rest of the day. make some seitan? do some stenciling? start a new sewing project? the possibilities are pretty much limitless.

whoops – i skipped a day again. guess i was too busy doing actual crafting! sweeeeet.
so yesterday, i was watching an X-Men marathon and i got all inspired by the opening sequence of the first movie. there was something that got me, something about the shapes of those mutated cells and whatnot. i pulled out my sketchpad and some colored pencils and started drawing some simple shapes.
next thing i know, i’m drawing the shapes on that denim skirt that’s been hanging up in my craftroom for the past two weeks.
then out comes the embroidery floss.

no post yesterday, and nothing to really show today. i’ve been working on birthday cards, and until the recipients actually receive the cards, i’m not going to post them.
