pret a porter
March 30, 2008 at 5:09 pm | In crafts, sewing | 8 Commentstoday, i finished that simplicity jacket that i posted about before.
i’m really pleased with how it turned out. the first photo is the best representation of the fabric colors. it’s not lined – i think if i make another i may include a lining. and the pattern didn’t call for a closure, but i wanted one. lucky for me i had a frog in my stash that matched the fabric – and that’s why i tend not to get rid of old craft supplies. i never know when they’re going to come in handy!
i like olive oil
March 27, 2008 at 8:13 am | In crafts, embroidery, sewing | 1 Commentyup. i do like olive oil. it tastes nice on my pasta (spaghetti, olive oil, parm/romano and pine nuts is a favorite combo) and it’s good for me. the only problem i have with olive oil isn’t the oil’s fault at all – it’s the fault of the apparent hole in my chin. see, that phantom hole is responsible for allowing a growing number of my shirts to be stained by olive oil. i eat olive oil-enhanced food and the next thing i know, oil stains galore. one of my newer shirts, a purple long-sleeved polo-style, was the chin hole’s latest victim.
i tried really hard to remove the stain, but with no luck, so i figured i’d salvage it with a little free-motion machine embroidery. i don’t have any “before” pictures of the shirt**, but i do have an “after” picture:
that darning foot came in handy again. i didn’t really plan this out, but i think it worked OK to cover the oil spots. i’m debating adding some flourishes in a contrasting color.
** i would have before pics, but my camera is now apparently possessed by Satan or maybe some ancient demi-god, demon, Cthulhu-type creature or what-have-you. not that there’s anything wrong with that, and i’d hate to offend any potentially scary supernatural creatures, but it sucks to have no control over what one’s camera is going to do. i was lucky to even be able to capture the crappy picture posted above. happily, the camera will be replaced within the next week. it’s lasted a good four years, despite having been dropped more than once (whoops!). RIP, little buddy.
at the starting line
March 22, 2008 at 2:02 pm | In crafts, sewing | 1 Commenti’ve started cutting out the fabric for a jacket using Simplicity pattern 4194.
it’s out-of-print now, or else i’d link to the pattern’s info on the Simplicity website. i guess i’ll end up looking very out-of-style when i finish the jacket, huh? (as if that’s ever concerned me before!) i find it really difficult to keep up with the styles the kids are wearing these days, so i just don’t even bother much anymore. heh.
tales from the artbook
March 11, 2008 at 2:33 pm | In collage, crafts | Comments Offi picked up some new paper punches at joann over the weekend (on sale, natch), and i’ve already started putting them to good use. so far, i’ve used the big circle and the flower. i also picked up a star punch.
magazine pages, plain paper copy, chocolate bar box (mmmmm, scharffenberger)
and then there’s this, across two pages in the book:
magazine pages and part of some sheet music i picked up at a flea market. i kind of mangled the background page, but hey, no big deal, right?
i don’t think i’m done with it yet, but i’m not quite sure what i’ll do with it next. add some glitter? just kidding! i would never add glitter to Hugh Laurie and Robert Sean Leonard.
or would i? hmmmm.
