have i mentioned how much i like the angry chicken blog? well, i do. last night, i finally got around to making pumpkin muffins, using the recipe posted at angry chicken, and i have to tell you, they are DELICIOUS. they are also delectable, delightful, decadent and divine. oh! and yummy! very yummy.

(how’s that for a crappy phonecam shot! wooo!)

i made a dozen muffins, using my silicon muffin forms, and i made very soft and chewy cookie-ish bits with the leftover batter (see the top photo). the recipe was super easy and i had everything on hand. yes, i keep cans of pumpkin and bags of chocolate chips on hand at all times. one never knows when one will need those things! and goodness knows i loves me some pumpkin and chocolate chips.

i’m sure i’ll end up making another batch soon.

finished goods

hee hee! i finished some more projects at the end of this week!

IMG_2743

knowing i have problems wearing wool next to my skin, a friend sent me two balls of this pink variegated 98.3% cotton/1.7% elastic yarn. i used up one ball to knit this hat, and i’m pretty pleased with the results.

IMG_2749a

and i used up a teeny portion of my fabric stash to make two neck support/commuter pillows (one for me and one for the mister) using McCalls pattern 8505, which appears to be out of print.

IMG_2750

i also whipped up some quick-and-simple pillow covers for each of them.

what’s in store for today? i have no idea what i’m going to work on, but i’m sure i’ll come up with something.

interim knitting

October 23, 2007 at 2:31 pm | In FO, crafts, knitting | Leave a Comment

since the weather’s been so darn hot lately, and i doubt winter will EVER arrive, i thought i’d interrupt my hat knitting and torture myself by knitting up a new scarf.

i pulled out my drawer of yarn odds and ends and pulled several lengths of yarn from about a dozen different balls and skeins. they were mostly leftovers from other projects (a couple of them from almost 20 years ago), along with some fun fur sent to me by the Lovely Linda. i knotted the yarns together at the ends (please don’t tell the knitting police on me) and rolled this new mega yarn into a ball. i used size 15 needles, and paired the mega yarn with a skein of black cotton ease and used a stockinette stitch (12 stitches per row). two days later, this is what i ended up with:

it’s 132″ long. no kidding! i just need to work the loose ends in and it’ll be ready to wear… uhhhh, sometime in january or february, if this weather continues.

monkeybread

October 22, 2007 at 2:32 pm | In food | Leave a Comment

sometimes i find the yummiest inspiration in my rss feeds. for instance, yesterday i was browsing my feeds and this Angry Chicken post got my mouth watering. MONKEYBREAD! why had i never heard of this stuff before? it’s got everything i like: sugar, bread, nuts, and (hello!) it has “monkey” in the title. what’s not to love?

a quick look at my pantry told me that i had everything on hand, except for the milk. my husband and i braved the elements (the winds been blowing fiercely around here) and walked to the store to pick up the milk. several hours later, this was our reward:

IMG_2735

it was night, and the light in our kitchen pretty much sucks, so the pictures aren’t as delicious-looking as i’d hoped for. but the monkeybread? oh, it was delicious.

IMG_2736

sweet and gooey and ever-so-slightly decadent.

IMG_2737

after we each had a piece, i boxed it up and set it aside to take to work and share with my coworkers. there’s no way we were allowing that yummy dessert to stay in our kitchen. that would mean we’d have to eat the whole thing, just the two of us…

ohhhhh, and now i kind of regret not leaving some at home for tonight.

the slipper experiment

October 21, 2007 at 8:45 am | In crafts, sewing | 1 Comment

a couple years ago, i bought a pair of crocheted cotton house slippers. they were cute, and very comfy (perfect fit!), and had grippy soles. last week, they finally gave up the ghost. i spent some time brainstorming yesterday, pulling out old patterns and directions, and crunching the numbers. i used the sole and front of a commercial pattern i’d picked up, and sketched in the sides and back. finally, i cut out some fabric, elastic, a couple layers of batting for the sole and some jiffy grip for the bottom.

IMG_2734

i think they worked out OK. they were a little loose around the front, so i lapped the fabric slightly, tacked it down and added a yoyo. they’re excellent for shuffling around the house, in any case.

what i learned from my experiment (what i should do next time around):
* add elastic around the front of the opening OR around more of the back (or maybe all the way around?)
* add a layer of batting to the upper
* use fleece for toasty winter slippers
* decorate the heck out of the upper (buttons, ribbons, yoyos, funky trims)

i may build another pair today, unless i get sucked in by my current knitting project. who knows, maybe i’ll finish knitting that hat today!

on deck

i’m rusting some tins for use in a project inspired by Claudine Hellmuth’s Collage Discovery Workshop book.

IMG_2729

they’ve been outside for a couple of weeks. i think i’m going to leave them out for another week or two and see how they look then.

and i”ve just started knitting a hat. i’d like to make a couple of halloween cards today, but we’ll see how that goes.

the mighty fruit protector

my husband likes to eat pears, but they always seem to get squished sometime between the moment they leave our kitchen and my husband’s lunchtime. they just don’t have enough protection in his workbag, and he doesn’t want to carry a lunchbox, so i brainstormed and came up with this:

IMG_2725

i printed the front fabric panel with my inkjet, added some batting and lining fabric, popped on some eyelets and ran a string through.

IMG_2726

the pear is snug as a bug in a rug! and slightly less likely to get smooshed in transit.

i’m making another for my apples, and then some to give away (and who knows – maybe to sell as well!).

meatless loaf

October 5, 2007 at 6:35 am | In food | Leave a Comment

inspired by these general directions at Chowhound, we made a “meatless loaf” for dinner last night. i didn’t take a picture of it, because it wasn’t terribly photogenic. not that it was a big pile of mush or anything, but c’mon – it’s meatloaf. and i’m pretty sure everyone knows what meatloaf looks like by now, right? we kind of winged it, and it turned out surprisingly well. it stuck together nicely and wasn’t too dense or heavy. in fact, it was pretty light, and very tasty.

Monkeyhouse Meatless Loaf

1 biggish white onion, chopped into tiny bits
3 cloves garlic, mashed
2 medium tomatoes, chopped into smallish bits
2 packages Yves veggie meatless ground
1.5 cups bread crumbs
.5 cup quick-cooking oats
two eggs
veg worcestershire sauce [we didn't measure, but it was probably a couple of teaspoons]
tamari (soy sauce) [same lack of measurement here!]

preheat oven to 400F.
take the meatless ground out of the fridge and let it sit on the counter to warm up a little.
saute onions and garlic in olive oil. season with salt, pepper and paprika.
once the onions have softened and become translucent, add the tomatoes and simmer until most of the liquid cooks off. set aside to cool.
grease a 8″ X 8″ square baking dish [we used a glass dish].
place the cooled onion mixture in a big bowl, and add the remaining ingredients.
squish it together using your hands [just like kindergarten play-dough time, remember?], being sure to mix it together thoroughly.
transfer the mixture to the pan and bake 45 minutes. the top will be a little crusty, but the inside should be moist and yummy.

and… enjoy! it’s especially good with ketchup. or catsup, if you prefer.

thanks, mr. repairman!

October 2, 2007 at 3:11 pm | In food | 3 Comments

the oven repairman arrived promptly at 08:00 saturday. who knew that an arrival time window of “sometime between 08:00 and 12:00″ really meant “08:00 on the dot”? color us surprised, but in a very good way. the repairguy diagnosed the problem, discovered the part needed for the repair was no longer available, then figured out a way to bypass that part altogether. the only caveat is that we can no longer use the self-clean feature. big whoop! that’s a big waste of electricity, anyway.

i christened the newly-repaired appliance on saturday by baking a loaf of pumpkin bread (from a mix) and an acorn squash, though not at the same time.

then sunday, i baked up yet another loaf of no-knead bread:

IMG_2718

i used 2/3 all-purpose flour and 1/3 spelt flour. and this time around, i baked it in the 3-quart dutch oven instead of the 5-quart. i ended up with a round, slightly taller loaf.

IMG_2719

i think i went a little crazy with the flour, but i really didn’t want the dough sticking to everything this time around. the inside wasn’t dried out or anything, so it worked out.

IMG_2720

it also helped to use a floured silicon mat as my prep surface instead of a plastic cutting board. i’m learning more with every loaf.
